January 12, 2007 - Penn Criminology Welcomes Dr. Adrian Raine
Department Chair Lawrence W. Sherman has announced the good news that the Jerry Lee Center of Criminology and the Department of Criminology are now the home of the new Richard Perry University Professor of Criminology and Psychiatry, Dr. Adrian Raine. Dr. Raine is currently a professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Southern California. His work has focused on the integration of biological factors and social environment in influencing violent behavior. Click here for the press release.

November 20, 2006 - Lawrence Sherman Appointed to the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime & Delinquency
On November 20, Pennsylvania Governor Edwards Rendell appointed Lawrence W. Sherman, director of the Jerry Lee Center of Criminology and professor of criminology, to the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. The Commission oversees the state agency responsible for justice system planning, innovation and research, and distribution of millions of dollars in federal and state criminal and juvenile justice grants.
"Dr. Sherman is one of our nation's most distinguished experts in the field of criminal justice research and policy," Rendell said. "His research has been cited by the United States Supreme Court, and governments around the world routinely reach out to Dr. Sherman for guidance when making key decisions about public safety. I am honored that he is willing to give of his time to help guide Pennsylvania as we make difficult policy and practice decisions here, including reducing handgun violence, prison overcrowding and offender recidivism."

The first Penn-Cambridge Criminology Colloquium was held live via VOIP (Video Over Internet Protocol) connection, featuring Visiting Professor Paul Rock and Sir Charles Pollard, former Chairman of the Youth Justice Board of England, on the topic of "The Politics of Victims Policy in England."

February, 2006 - Academy of Experimental Criminology’s 2006 McCord Award Presented to Department Chair Lawrence Sherman
The Joan McCord Award Committee comprising Professors Greenwood (Chair), MacKenzie and Mazerolle have decided to give the 3rd Annual Joan McCord Award to Professor Lawrence Sherman, Director of the Jerry Lee Center of Criminology, Albert M. Greenfield Professor of Human Relations at the University of Pennsylvania and President of the Academy of Experimental Criminology (1999-2001).

March 1, 2005 - M.S. Program Director Laurie Robinson was named to serve on a new national commission examining U.S. prison and jail conditions. Co-chaired by former U.S. Attorney General Nicholas de B. Katzenbach (appointed by President Johnson) and former Third Circuit Chief Judge John Gibbons (appointed by President Nixon), the 21-member Commission on Safety and Abuse in America's Prisons will spend one year exploring problems inside U.S. correctional facilities. Dr. James Gilligan, a visiting scholar at Penn's School of Social Work and an expert on violence prevention, was also appointed to the commission. Four public hearings will be held. The Commission is staffed and funded through the Vera Institute of Justice, a nonprofit organization based in New York. For more information, see www.prisoncommission.org

November 24, 2004 - Philadelphia philanthropist and radio station owner Jerry Lee -- a longtime supporter of Penn criminology, for whom the Jerry Lee Center of Criminology is named -- was confirmed on November 21 by the United States Senate as a Presidentially appointed member of the Board of Directors of the U.S. Department of Education's National Board for Education Sciences.
November 11, 2004 - George S. Bridges, a criminologist who obtained his Ph.D. from Penn in 1979, was named President of Whitman College in Washington State. Bridges' research and writing has focused primarily on juvenile offenders, in particular problems faced by racial and ethnic minorities in the juvenile justice system. Since 1982 he has been a professor of sociology at the University of Washington, and has served as the University's Dean of Undergraduate Education since 2002. In 1995 he received the Washington Council on Crime & Delinquency's Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Scholar.
October 27, 2004 - Professor Charles Wellford of the University of Maryland will teach the graduate course in criminal justice in the spring semester of 2005. A former chair of the National Academy of Sciences' Committee on Law and Justice and former President of the American Society of Criminology, Dr. Wellford is an alumnus of Penn and a world-renowned scholar. He will work with Penn's inaugural class of M.S.students in criminology.
