Larry Schweinhart (Ph.D., Indiana University, 1975) has conducted research at the HighScope Educational Research Foundation in Ypsilanti, Michigan, since 1975, chaired its research division from 1989 to 2003, and now serves as its president.  He has studied crime prevention due to participation in high-quality preschool programs in two randomized-trial studies: -- the HighScope Perry Preschool Study through age 40, which established the potential of such programs to achieve long-term benefits, prevent crime, and result in a large financial return on investment. -- the HighScope Preschool Curriculum Comparison Study through age 23, which found child-initiated learning activities in preschool programs to be essential to their crime prevention.
