Jonathan Shepherd is Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Cardiff University, UK, where he also chairs the WHO Violent Crime Task Group. His research interests - the causes and prevention of violence and its' sequelae - stem from his ongoing work as a surgeon who treats victims, and particularly from his seminal studies at the interface between criminology and public health. He has led randomised controlled experiments in community, judicial and clinical settings and his data matching research has led to new understanding of trends in violence and the public health impact of policing and other crime prevention measures. His work to implement research findings includes the development of a science-based care pathway for victims, the prototype crime reduction partnership in the UK, adoption of tempered glass in the alcohol industry and, most recently, the development of a prototype university police school based on medical school principles. He is the recipient of the 2000 Leibinger and 2003 Sellin Glueck international research prizes, honorary fellowships in public health and emergency medicine and an honorary doctorate from Malmo University. He is also the recipient of the 2008 Stockholm Prize in Criminology.
